Spider-Man’s IMAX Snub Exposes Cinema’s Premium Problem

Spider-Man’s IMAX Snub Exposes Cinema’s Premium Problem

Lede

Britain welcomed a second cinema-saving event film while its one-room IMAX model was still busy with the first.

Hermit Off Script

I will start with the most annoying part: Spider-Man: Brand New Day deserved an IMAX premiere, but it opened without one because The Odyssey already occupied the format’s most valuable rooms. My complaint applies to the opening, not necessarily the whole run. On 3 August 2026, IMAX announced that Spider-Man would reach IMAX screens from 7 August, with its formal press release confirming selected North American cinemas from 6 August. UK availability still depends on the listings at each venue. I genuinely cannot wait to see it again in IMAX when a suitable screening appears. The UK has many IMAX venues, but I could find no cinema advertising two separate IMAX auditoriums under one roof. If one exists, it is hiding more effectively than Peter Parker. Cinema chains do invest, so saying they invest nothing would be too absolute. The sharper problem is selective investment: one expensive room, several premium surcharges and no spare capacity when two genuine event films arrive within a fortnight. The result feels less like rebuilding cinema and more like collecting what remains while admissions stay far below 2019. For the moment, cinema is safe whenever a film is built to capture a mass audience. Spider-Man and The Odyssey have proved that people will still turn up in enormous numbers. The danger is treating a few giant weekends as the whole business plan.
It was also interesting to see Tom Holland and Zendaya sharing the screen again. They are now married in real life, have a long on-screen history, and both appear in two of 2026’s biggest box-office films. They are not literally the year’s top two worldwide as of 3 August, but fourth and fifth is hardly a quiet year. I also noticed how far the effects have moved. The way Spidey’s webs carry him around the buildings feels different from a few years ago – smoother, faster and more convincing. That movement deserved the largest screen available. Then came the small hiccup with the sound. The dialogue felt forced forward, almost pushed out of the centre speaker so every word could compete with the rest of the mix. It reminded me of the cinema-sound complaint I made after Obsession. I do not think the film itself is automatically to blame, and I cannot fairly pin it on DTS without knowing what that auditorium actually used. Dolby confirms an Atmos presentation for the film, while the playback I heard could have been affected by calibration, volume, speakers, acoustics or the mix itself. IMAX is not the only technically capable format, but it remains the one I trust most to make the image and sound feel like the same treat. That lack of trust in ordinary rooms is the cinema operator’s problem. Maybe someone will eventually build glasses that reproduce the scale, detail and spatial sound of IMAX from a room at home. This is not a prediction, only the obvious direction of travel if cinemas keep rationing their best experience. By the time the dinosaurs in charge notice, audiences may have learnt that the finest cinema no longer needs a cinema.

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY – Official Trailer

Peter Parker now fights crime full-time as Spider-Man in a world that no longer remembers him. Watching his old friends continue their lives without him places increasing pressure on Peter and triggers a change he may not be able to control. At the same time, a powerful unseen threat puts New York and the people he loves in danger, forcing him to face both the new enemy and what he is becoming.

What does not make sense

  • A film sold as a major cinema event could not have an IMAX premiere because the previous major cinema event still owned the room.
  • Cinemas advertise a menu of premium choices, but one occupied auditorium can remove the format from an entire venue.
  • An industry with attendance about 30 per cent below 2019 still makes its best experience scarce enough to require a second visit.
  • Spider-Man proved there was vast demand without IMAX, yet the audience had to wait for the presentation designed to make a blockbuster feel larger.
  • Clear dialogue should be a basic part of a cinema ticket, not a reward hidden behind a premium surcharge.

Sense check / The numbers

  1. Spider-Man: Brand New Day opened in UK cinemas on 29 July 2026. UK cinema listings give a runtime of 145 minutes, while Dolby’s page gives 150 minutes. [Cineworld; Dolby]
  2. The Odyssey opened on 17 July and IMAX said its global run would last at least 3 weeks. Spider-Man appeared on IMAX’s calendar for 7 August, while a separate announcement confirmed selected North American screenings from 6 August. [IMAX]
  3. Only 3 UK screens can present The Odyssey in 70mm IMAX: BFI IMAX, the Science Museum’s Ronson Theatre and Vue Manchester Printworks. I found 0 verified UK complexes advertising 2 IMAX auditoriums under one roof, although that second figure is a venue check rather than an official national audit. [Science Museum; Time Out; IMAX]
  4. Sony’s Monday update put Spider-Man’s North American opening at $360 million and its worldwide opening at $932 million. Box Office Mojo still showed the earlier $927 million estimate when checked, alongside The Odyssey at $911.4 million. The films stood fourth and fifth worldwide for 2026. [AP; Box Office Mojo]
  5. UK cinemas recorded 123.5 million admissions in 2025, 30 per cent below 2019. Box office reached GBP 996.8 million, up 2 per cent on 2024 but still 21 per cent below 2019. [BFI]

The sketch

Scene 1: The premium choice
Two giant film posters face one premium-screen door while a cinema manager guards the handle.
Dialogue:
Spider-Man: “My premiere?”
Manager: “One room.”
The Odyssey: “Booked.”

Scene 2: The sound upgrade
An audience member faces a crowned centre speaker while the surrounding speakers gather dust.
Dialogue:
Centre speaker: “DIALOGUE!”
Audience: “I can hear you.”
Cinema: “Premium clarity.”

Scene 3: The home replacement
An old cinema dinosaur guards one giant screen while a customer tries futuristic glasses outside.
Dialogue:
Dinosaur: “You will wait.”
Customer: “I already left.”
Glasses: “Now showing.”

What to watch, not the show

  • Whether UK chains actually list Spider-Man in IMAX from 7 August rather than treating a global announcement as local availability.
  • Whether premium surcharges pay for more large-format capacity and regular sound calibration, or merely more premium branding.
  • Whether delayed IMAX runs become a quiet way to sell the same film to the same viewer twice.
  • Whether a few enormous event weekends lift year-round admissions or simply conceal the quieter months.
  • How quickly headsets or glasses close the quality gap between a premium auditorium and a room at home.

The Hermit take

Spider-Man proves people will still leave home when cinema offers an event.
Cinema’s problem is rationing the very experience that gives leaving home a point.

Keep or toss

Keep / Toss.

Keep the film and its new sense of motion.
Toss the one-room premium bottleneck and any auditorium that makes dialogue shout for attention.
