Good Fortune: Heaven Tries Class Satire and Misses the Joke

Good Fortune sends Keanu Reeves into a gig-economy class swap, but uneven satire, soft conclusions and rushed morals leave the angel doing overtime again.

Good Fortune gives Heaven a gig-economy assignment, then softens its class satire just when the joke should start biting.

Hermit Off Script

Good Fortune annoys me because the ingredients are better than the result. Put a struggling gig worker, a wealthy venture capitalist and an inexperienced angel into the same story and there is plenty to work with. The obvious question is whether money buys happiness. The film immediately discovers a more awkward answer: money may not manufacture love or meaning, but it does pay rent, buy food, create free time and remove a great deal of daily panic. That should sharpen the satire. Instead, the film keeps trying to rescue the familiar moral that wealth is not all it is cracked up to be while showing why Arj rather reasonably prefers not being broke.
Gabriel is slightly lost. He is an inexperienced angel trying to solve a structural problem with one neat spiritual lesson. Reeves’ gentle, slightly detached presence actually suits very well. My problem is the script around him. His innocence becomes the same joke several times while the class argument waits for an answer with more teeth.
Keke Palmer’s Elena and the union thread point towards something more useful: poor working conditions are not repaired by discovering the correct attitude towards suffering. Yet the film keeps pulling back towards charm and personal enlightenment. Mixing fantasy, comedy and social criticism is not the problem. The problem is finding a serious economic question and then becoming nervous about answering it.
Heaven sends a lesson about money. Earth keeps the receipt.

P.S. Update – 4 September 2026:
The theatrical run eventually finished at approximately USD 26.3 million worldwide against a reported USD 30 million production budget. Box Office Mojo and The Numbers differ slightly on the final worldwide figure, so approximately USD 26.3 million is the sensible number. Rotten Tomatoes now lists 79 per cent from critics and 80 per cent from verified audiences, and Lionsgate moved the film to digital release on 7 November 2025. Those later results make one correction especially clear: Good Fortune was not broadly rejected as a “tonal trainwreck”. The sharper criticism is that a mostly liked comedy found a real class problem and then softened its own answer.

Movie synopsis

Gabriel is a well-meaning but inexperienced guardian angel who becomes interested in Arj, a struggling Los Angeles gig worker living from job to job. Believing that Arj needs to learn that wealth cannot guarantee happiness, Gabriel switches his circumstances with Jeff, a wealthy venture capitalist. The experiment quickly becomes more complicated than Gabriel expected, forcing all three to confront money, work, security and what actually makes a life worth living.

What does not make sense

  • Gabriel sets out to prove money cannot buy happiness, while the experiment immediately demonstrates that money solves housing, time and basic security.
  • The film identifies the brutality of gig work, then keeps retreating from structural criticism into individual life lessons.
  • Elena’s union organising points towards collective action, but the magical rich-poor swap gets far more attention.
  • Gabriel’s incompetence is funny, but the screenplay keeps returning to the same joke instead of letting him understand why his lesson failed.
  • Wealth is treated as spiritually insufficient and practically miraculous at the same time.
  • Empathy is useful, but asking rich and poor people to understand each other does not automatically change who controls wages, rent or working conditions.
  • The film wants a comforting ending after spending most of its runtime proving that financial insecurity is anything but comforting.

The sketch

Scene 1: The heavenly experiment
An inexperienced angel stands at a celestial switchboard with two levers marked “RICH” and “BROKE”.
Dialogue:
Angel: “Money isn’t happiness.”
Worker: “Try rent first.”
Scene 2: The one-week lesson
A wealthy man studies a grocery receipt while the former gig worker relaxes beside a swimming pool.
Dialogue:
Rich Man: “This is impossible.”
Worker: “Exactly.”
Scene 3: The moral department
The angel presents a report to Heaven while a union organiser waits beside him holding a workplace placard.
Dialogue:
Heaven: “Lesson learned?”
Angel: “Money helps.”
Organiser: “Shocking.”

What to watch, not the show

  • Gig work being framed as personal struggle when much of the insecurity comes from pay, scheduling and ownership.
  • The difference between money buying happiness and money buying the conditions in which happiness is easier to pursue.
  • Union organising appearing beside a story that mostly prefers magical individual solutions.
  • Wealth satire becoming softer when major studio comedy still wants audiences to leave smiling.
  • Star casting doing emotional work that the screenplay sometimes avoids.
  • The return of mid-budget theatrical comedy and whether audiences will still leave streaming platforms to support it.

The Hermit take

The film finds the class problem and then softens the answer.
Keanu’s angel is not the misfire. The timid conclusion is.

Verdict: Keep or Toss

Verdict: Keep / Toss.

Keep Reeves, Palmer and the class premise.
Toss the idea that poverty mainly needs a better attitude rather than better conditions.
