British politics has become a room full of shouting mirrors, so a show where people still listen feels almost suspiciously civilised.
Hermit Off Script

I want to recommend The Rest Is Politics: Leading because it is one of the few political shows in Britain that still feels clean, real and useful. Not perfect. Nothing political is perfect unless it has not yet met a politician. But this one has something rare: two people with serious experience who can speak about power without sounding like they are selling a party leaflet through my letterbox. Rory Stewart and Alastair Campbell come from different political worlds, and that matters because the conversation does not depend on everyone pretending to agree before the microphone goes on. They can disagree without dragging the listener into a tribal mud bath. That alone feels like public service with better lighting. The interviews work because the guests are not treated like saints, villains or content machines. They are asked about power, leadership, failure, ambition, belief and the private machinery behind public life. And yes, sometimes the old establishment smell is still in the curtains. Campbell was deep inside New Labour. Stewart was deep inside Conservative government. This is not a monastery for pure souls. It is better than that. It is a room where people who know the system explain how the system breathes, lies, panics and occasionally does something decent by accident. In a British media culture that often rewards outrage, speed and cheap cleverness, Leading slows the room down. That is why I recommend it. Not because it saves politics, but because it reminds us politics can still sound human before the circus horse kicks the table.
Is Trump on Putin’s Side? | The President Zelenskyy Interview
Why it deserves the Hermit recommendation
- It treats disagreement as a tool, not a weapon.
- It gives political experience without turning it into propaganda soup.
- It lets serious guests speak for longer than a headline sneeze.
- It asks about leadership as character, not only career.
- It is clean in tone, even when the subject is dirty.
- It reminds listeners that politics is made by people, not only slogans, factions and algorithmic foam.

The Hermit take
Recommended.
It is rare British political media where the table has not been flipped before the first question.
Keep or toss
Verdict: Keep.
Keep the clean disagreement, the long-form interviews and the grown-up tone.
Toss any temptation to treat insiders as priests.
