Sense check / The numbers
- Life expectancy in the UK in 2020 to 2022: 78.6 for men, 82.6 for women. Lower than pre-pandemic. [ONS]
- Centenarians doubled in 20 years: from 8,300 in 2004 to 16,600 in 2024. Men trebled from 910 to 3,100. [ONS]
- Healthy life is not keeping up. Years spent in poor health have been a core concern, with recent evidence of stalling or decline in healthy life expectancy in England and Wales. [BMJ] [DHSC/Health Profile]

What to watch, not the show
- Healthy life expectancy vs life expectancy. Count sick years, not candles.
- Pension reviews that use longevity headlines to justify later retirements. Track dates and timetables.
- Inequalities by region and income. Average figures hide sharp gaps.
- Hype cycles around Blue Zones. Ask for data, not postcards.
- Compression of morbidity claims. Are sick years shrinking or expanding.
The Hermit take
Longevity without healthy years is a deferred bill, not a gift. If policy wants later retirements, it must buy us health, not slogans.
