Live longer myths: the sales pitch to work till you drop

Live longer myths: the sales pitch to work till you drop

Lede

The promise: live to 100. The fine print: work longer, retire shorter, feel worse.

What does not make sense

  • Articles selling secrets of superagers while ignoring years lived in poor health.
  • Headlines on centenarians used as mood music for raising pension ages.
  • Lifestyle lists that read like ads for supplements and retreats, not public health.
  • Cherry-picked Blue Zone tales treated as data.
  • Policy that counts birthdays, not healthy years.

Sense check / The numbers

  1. Life expectancy in the UK in 2020 to 2022: 78.6 for men, 82.6 for women. Lower than pre-pandemic. [ONS]
  2. Centenarians doubled in 20 years: from 8,300 in 2004 to 16,600 in 2024. Men trebled from 910 to 3,100. [ONS]
  3. Healthy life is not keeping up. Years spent in poor health have been a core concern, with recent evidence of stalling or decline in healthy life expectancy in England and Wales. [BMJ] [DHSC/Health Profile]
  4. The law says the state pension age rises from 66 to 67 between 2026 and 2028. A new review in July 2025 reopens the case for further rises. [UK Gov] [Reuters]
  5. Blue Zones hype is shaky. Demographers and science outlets have flagged data problems and overclaims. Treat the miracle diets with caution. [Science] [UCL]

The sketch

Scene 1: A newsroom. Editor: We need a centenarian secret. Reporter: Good genes and luck. Editor: Needs to be turmeric. Reporter sighs.
Scene 2: A Whitehall office. Official: Since people live longer, they can work longer. Advisor: Their healthy years are not rising as fast. Official: Whisper that bit.
Scene 3: A wellness expo. Influencer: Buy my 12 rules to 120. Doctor: Rule 1 is survive childhood infections in 1920. Influencer: Limited-time discount.

What to watch, not the show

  • Healthy life expectancy vs life expectancy. Count sick years, not candles.
  • Pension reviews that use longevity headlines to justify later retirements. Track dates and timetables.
  • Inequalities by region and income. Average figures hide sharp gaps.
  • Hype cycles around Blue Zones. Ask for data, not postcards.
  • Compression of morbidity claims. Are sick years shrinking or expanding.

The Hermit take

Longevity without healthy years is a deferred bill, not a gift. If policy wants later retirements, it must buy us health, not slogans.

Keep or toss

Toss.

  • Keep rigorous public health.
  • Toss miracle lists and pension-by-press-release.
