Fuze and the Quiet Downgrade of Cinema Once IMAX Is Gone

Fuze is decent enough, but the real tension is whether ordinary cinema still deserves your trousers, your train fare and your wet Birmingham shoes.

Fuze is exactly the sort of film that exposes the problem without quite being the problem. I sat there watching a perfectly watchable British thriller and kept thinking less about the film than about the room. That is not a great sign. It has the brisk, competent pulse of something built to keep me engaged for just over an hour and a half, not to pin me to the wall in awe. There is craft here, there are proper actors here, and there is enough tension to stop the whole thing collapsing into mush.
But this felt less like cinema and more like a respectable Sky night out that wandered into a multiplex by mistake. We call it a cinema experience because it happens outside the house, costs more and gives us an excuse to walk through town afterwards. In my case, the stroll through Birmingham had almost as much value as the ticket. That is where the insult lands.
Cineworld Unlimited increasingly feels like the same basic promise as Netflix, Prime or any other endless buffet: plenty to choose from, but not everything demands a giant screen. Streaming films and series have become polished, comfortable and very easy to sink into, so an ordinary cinema auditorium now has to offer something more than size. Comfort matters. My sofa has no queue, sticky flooring or stranger breathing nachos into the back of my neck.
Fuze did not lose because it is bad. It lost because it is good in a way that flatters the home. IMAX still makes the case. Dune: Part Two still humiliates the living room through sheer scale. Below that level, though, too many ordinary screenings feel like enlarged television with worse legroom.
So yes, Fuze gave me a reason to go out, walk through Birmingham and watch a decent thriller. On a dry day, that can be enough. On a rainy one, the kettle starts making a very persuasive counter-offer.

Fuze has now made the journey the original article expected and is available on NOW as a Sky Cinema title, including a 4K UHD option on supported plans and devices. Rotten Tomatoes now lists 72 per cent from 106 critic reviews and 78 per cent from more than 100 verified audience ratings, while Metacritic has settled at 60 from 24 critics. Those later numbers barely change the original diagnosis: decent, brisk and enjoyable, but hardly a film that needed to fight the sofa forever. The cinema gave it an outing. Sky eventually gave it the slippers.

Movie synopsis

An unexploded Second World War bomb is discovered at a construction site in central London, triggering a large evacuation and bringing bomb-disposal expert Major Will Tranter into the operation. While police and military teams try to secure the area, a group led by diamond expert Karalis uses the disruption as cover for an audacious jewel heist. As both operations unfold inside the evacuation zone, the authorities race against time while loyalties and identities become increasingly uncertain.

What does not make sense

• A solid, tense British thriller can still feel more “Friday night on Sky” than “leave the house immediately”.
• Cineworld Unlimited removes much of the ticket decision, but it cannot make an ordinary auditorium feel special.
• The wider the gap between IMAX and standard screens becomes, the harder standard cinema has to fight the television at home.
• Streaming has made comfort, control and consistency part of the viewing experience while some cinemas still treat discomfort as tradition.
• Fuze was already a Sky Original before it entered cinemas, so the sofa was never exactly an unexpected destination.
• The walk through Birmingham became part of the entertainment value because the room alone was not enough.
• A cinema should make home feel smaller. Too many standard screenings merely make home feel easier.

• How the trip into town has become part of the entertainment value.
• How bad weather turns “cinema night” into a negotiation with your sofa.

The Hermit take

A decent thriller. A weak reason to leave the sofa.
If cinema wants reverence back, it needs more than a larger rectangle.

Keep the film for a quiet thriller night.
Toss the fantasy that every non-IMAX auditorium still qualifies as an event.
